Intake: Reading Diagnostics and Entering Level Assessment
This page includes a reading diagnostic and a short intake assessment to gauge the learners' native language, English decoding skills, and other entry skills related to the Pathway to Literacy levels A-D. You can use these tools as supports during intake to determine what the starting points of your learners are as they enter your classroom or program.
Intake Assessment Training Video
This video will guide you through using the Intake Assessment.
The Intake Assessment is a Google Slide Deck which you go through with your learner before starting teaching. Literacy learners can vary widely in their abilities in the 4 different skill areas: oral, writing, reading and phonics. This assessment helps to determine, upon entry, what their level is in each of these skill areas, and also helps calculate an overall level.
Intake Assessment Marking Sheet
We recommend you print off (or even laminate to reuse) this Intake Assessment Marking Sheet and have it next to you while you test the learner. It has space for notes, and space to add up the points the learner earns to determine their level.
Reading Diagnostic Training Video
This video will guide you through assessing potential learners' reading levels using the multi-lingual and/or English diagnostic tools. Not all English Learners need literacy development, so it is important to check your potential learners' actual literacy levels before enrolling them in literacy classes.
